Do Miracles Still Happen Today

I was sitting on the balcony, of an Ocean Front Condo in Hawaii, when a thought popped into my mind. The thought was, “Is God still doing miracles like the ones he did in the Bible?”

My wife called me so that we could go and eat. As we were driving down Front Street, in downtown Lahaina, I saw the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant on the right hand side. I asked my wife if she wanted to eat there. She said, “Yes” and we went in. The waitress sat us on the side overlooking the ocean.

The waitress then took our drink order and left. Actually, it was on my birthday May 7th. I turned around and saw a picture on the wall that said, “Miracles happen everyday; some people don’t think so, but they do.” I was blown away! God had answered my thought from a picture on the wall. Brace yourself! That was a miracle in itself. Some of you maybe saying, “That was a coincidence!” I will answer you like this, “GOD IS THE ANSWER TO COINCIDENCE!” Now that we are on the same page; we are going to look into miracles.

Miracle: An extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs; an extremely outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment. (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Now, that we have read the definition of miracle… I would like us to look at the scripture John 2:1-11 when Jesus did his first miracle. Observe: “And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.

Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.”

As we look into the first miracle that Jesus performed in Cana of Galilee, we can conclude a couple of things. First, since Jesus performed this miracle at a wedding; we can conclude that God performs miracles to establish his covenants. Marriage is a covenant between a husband, wife, and God. Is it a coincidence that God did his first miracle at a wedding? I don’t think so! I believe that he did this on purpose to accomplish two things. The first accomplishment was to show us that he blesses marriage. The second accomplishment was to show his disciples that he was the son of God. God uses miracles to increase our faith and to reveal his glory.

Notice what verse 11 says, “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.” A miracle is a tool that God uses to show unbelievers who he is. Don’t you think that the young men who God asked to pour the water into the water pots; believed that Jesus was sent from God after he turned the water into wine? Wouldn’t you? I would; but some of us wouldn’t even believe if a man came back from the dead! Pun intended.

God uses miracles to establish his covenants:

Do you remember when God came to Abraham and told him that he was going to make him the father of many nations and that he was going to bring the messiah through his lineage? God told Abraham this when he didn’t even have any children. God made a covenant with Abraham. He promised him thy seed and land. Observe; “For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.” (Genesis 13:15-16) “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made.

He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.” (Galatians 3:16) How did God establish this covenant? He established this covenant through a miracle. “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.” (Genesis 17:1-4) “And the LORD God visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.

For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.” Now Abraham was 100 years old and his wife Sarah was 90. Was that not a miracle? It is impossible for a woman that is 90 yrs old to have a baby. But with God… all things are possible. Do you see how God does miracles to establish his covenants? If God makes a covenant with you; He will perform it no matter what.

God reveals, prepares for service, and delivers his people through miracles:

Observe this synopsis of how God used miracles with Moses. “And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold. Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt. This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? The same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.” (Acts 7:30-36)

Do you see how God used the miracle of the burning bush to show Moses that he was God and to prepare him for the service of delivering his children from Egypt? God performed many miracles through Moses and brought the Israelites out of Egypt with his stretched out Arm and Mighty Hand. And we can’t forget how he showed Israel and Pharoah his power; when he parted the Red Sea and the Israelites crossed on dry ground but the Egyptians drowned when they tried. Actually, he showed the whole world who he is with that miracle.

God does miracles in response to prayer:

Remember when Herod had placed Peter in prison? This happened after Herod had killed James the brother of John. The church made prayer, for Peter, to God without ceasing. “And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly.

And his chains fell off from his hands. And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.” (Acts 12:6-10)

Peter then went to the house of Mary, the mother of John. As Peter was knocking, at the gate, a young girl name Rhoda heard his voice. She didn’t open the gate because of joy, but ran and told others. They didn’t believe and said that it was his ghost. But when they came and saw that it was Peter… they were astonished. God did this miracle because of their prayers. This wasn’t the first time God did a miracle because of prayer. God sent an angel to visit Daniel when he was praying as well. Which brings us to another truth about miracles; God uses Angels sometimes when he is performing his miracles.

God does miracles because he loves us and often uses Angels:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”(John 3:16)” And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:26-35) God sent his Son the Lord Jesus Christ because he loves us. This miracle took place because of Love and God used Gabriel the angel to deliver the message.

God does miracles for his good pleasure:

“And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7) This is a miracle that shows that God is the Potter and we are the clay. He can make and remake us anytime he pleases. He made some vessels for honor and some for dishonor. We are convinced that he made his children to show his honor and glory. However, he also made us for his good pleasure. Look at what Revelation 4:11 says, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. God does miracles for his pleasure.

In Conclusion:

The answer to the question, “Do miracles still happen today,” is; Yes. Miracles happen everyday, all day long. God still has a covenant with his children. God still blesses marriage. God still wants to show unbelievers that he is real and that he loves them. The church is still praying and believing God for miracles. God still wants to show us his glory. God told me just the other day; “Behold, I will do a new thing… shall you not see it spring forth?” God still loves us.

In fact, Paul said, “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39) I challenge everyone who is reading this blog to open your spiritual eyes and watch God do miracles that will blow your natural mind and take you on the journey of your life. I can tell you from experience… there is never a boring day with God. He is a Father that loves to give his children good gifts.
