Who is the Boss

National Boss Day, which is a secular holiday, celebrated on October 16 in the United States and Canada is a day that has traditionally been set aside for employees to thank their boss for being kind and fair throughout the year. Many people take their boss to lunch or do something else kind and thoughtful for them.
Good employees are hard to find, but the same holds true for bosses. Working for a fair and kind person makes the hard work associated with jobs so much more rewarding. Today people throughout Middle Tennessee have treated their bosses in some way or another to express their gratitude
Now that I am a minister, I have no earthly boss. However, I have a heavenly Boss. I’m not able to take Him out to lunch but do find it possible to express gratitude for His kind treatment to me.He’s not been fair, in that He’s extended grace to me, by sending His Son to die in my place. That means I’m no longer a slave to sin but rather a bond servant to Christ.
What a job description, huh? Fortunately He’s left me with a working manual. The Bible provides the instruction necessary for on the job training. And speaking of instructions, here is an interesting one which stood out to me recently:
“Commit your works to the Lord, And Your thoughts will be established.”Proverbs 16:3
Commit your works to the Lord and THEN your thoughts will be established? How interesting, especially since it’s in our nature to do the exact opposite. Many times we want to commit our thoughts to the Lord and let our works be established.
In other words,we want to be our own boss, write our own ticket, and make our own place. We give God the plan we have devised and expect Him to make it happen. And we become very discouraged and possibly disgusted when things do not come to pass just as we planned them. Yet there is a better way.
Proverbs 16:3 in the Amplified Bible says this:
“Roll your works upon the Lord (commit and trust them wholly to Him; He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and) so shall your plans be established and succeed.”
This verse not only provides the key for success as a kingdom worker but also instructions from the Boss on how to come up with a workable plan. As Christians we must remember that we belong to God. It’s not the other way around. It is His work we are doing. The lives we touch are His lives. The souls that we lead to Christ are His souls. The people who are delivered from bondage are His children. Any honor and glory received goes to Him.
Taking it down to an even more personal level, when it comes to servicing to the Lord, whether it be preaching a sermon, singing a song, or writing Christian materials we need to examine ourselves thoroughly. Are we spending time with God, committing ourselves to Him, and waiting for our thoughts to be established? Or do we just throw something together because we have been at this for so long that we can perform some of these things in our sleep?
God wants us to be busy about His work, not our idea of what His work should be. We need to go to Him and get the plan, committing every breath we take and every single step we make to Him. What awesome displays of His power we will then see. Miracles, signs, are all a part of the success He has planned for His work.
Let each one of us who claims to be a Christian remember that it is in our best interest to work His plan and always recognize Him as being the Boss.
